Writing about how much I love Rescue Gel the other day reminded me that I have been meaning to share some other essential oil blends with you.
Here are three lovely blends for different moments in life.
Uplifting & stress relief
My very favourite blend (which I have shared before), is a mix of Frankincense, Orange & Lavender oils. For an oil burner, use about
- 1 drop Frankincense (a base note)
- 3 drops Lavender (a middle note)
- 2 drops Orange (a top note)
To use with a base oil for a foot soak or massage blend, keep to that ratio but increase the amount to up to about 30 drops per 30 mls for a therapeutic blend (eg for use on your feet only, or in a foot bath) or 20-30 drops per 100 mls for a massage oil.
Frankincense is one of the more expensive essential oils to buy, but you don’t need much of it so it lasts a long time. And it really is an essential, in my book, if you are wanting to reduce stress or anxiety, and has been found to help with depression. See this article for more info. At the same time, citrus oils are also uplifting, and in this study were found to reduce the need for anti-depressants.
Edited to add: Norwex now has an essential oil blend a little like this available, with Orange and Lime, but also with just a hint of fresh Mint and delicate Rose to help uplift and energise. I love this because Rose, especially, is too expensive for me to buy a whole bottle of for mixing, but one of it’s benefits is to work as an antidepressant. Norwex calls this their energising blend, but I would also call it uplifting.
Focus & mental clarity
Back when I was a working as a massage therapist, I often used a blend of Lime & Lavender in an oil burner, if the client didn’t want to totally zone out (for example if they had to go back to work afterwards). Lavender is soothing and relaxing but also helps with mental focus (that study found that although it increased drowsiness, maths problems could be done more quickly AND accurately after 3 minutes of exposure to Lavender), and Lime is both uplifting and stimulating, so this is also a great blend for studying.
In an oil burner use:
- 4 drops of Lavender
- 2 drops of Lime
Or go 50/50 if you prefer.
- 2 drops Lavender
- 2 drops Roman Chamomile
- 2 drops Sweet Marjoram
Because the causes of insomnia are so varied, so too must the response be. But these three oils are synergistic in creating drowsiness and reducing nervous tension. You can also add a drop of Sandalwood or Frankincense to this blend.
Remember essential oil cautions, especially if you are using them on your skin. If you have a particular condition (be it high or low blood pressure, pregnancy, depression or something else) always do your own research and make an informed decision about which oils you are prepared to use. When treating a medical condition, seeing a qualified aromatherapist is an excellent idea.
Edited to add: Norwex have just introduced a “soothing blend” of essential oils also – theirs has lavender, vanilla, chamomile and sandalwood. Again, sandalwood is an expensive oil to buy on it’s own (though not as exxy as Rose), so this is not necessarily a blend I would make myself, but I do like it!
