National Permaculture Day on May First

Sunday May 1 is National Permaculture Day in Australia.
Permaculture is a term that was coined in the ’70s as a shortening of both “permanent agriculture” and “permanent culture”, by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. Josh Byrne, well known from the ABC TV Show, Gardening Australia, calls permaculture “practical, grass roots sustainability in action”.
What is Permaculture?
According to The Permaculture Research Institute of Australia, permaculture is

the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems.

And, perhaps more importantly,

The philosophy behind permaculture is one of working with, rather than against, nature…

Permaculture can be practiced on the scale of a tiny courtyard urban block or a whole community.
