Renault Launches Solar Project That Could Support a Town of 15,000

Renault, partnering with Gestamp Solar, has launched the global automotive industry’s most ambitious solar project. They are installing enough solar roof panels on their French plants to reduce CO2 emissions by 30,000 tonnes a year. The project’s power capacity will be by 60MW – enough to power a town of 15,000 for a full year.
The solar panels, which will eventually cover a total area of 450,000 m2 (equivalent to more than 60 football fields), are scheduled to be installed by February 2012, with a start date for the project of mid June 2011. Renault has other claims to being one of the truly “green companies“, with a zero carbon plant in Tangiers and its eco² vehicles, all of which emit less than 120 g/km of carbon dioxide.
Renault’s strategic plan, Renault 2016 – Drive The Change,  aims to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 10% by 2013 and a further 10% between 2013 and 2016.
